Bianco-Valente, Come il Vento (Like the Wind), 2013, Becharre, Lebanon
Come il vento è l’opera che abbiamo realizzato durante una residenza a Becharre, una comunità cristiano-maronita del nord del Libano, dove siamo stati invitati per il progetto A place for action, a cura di Katia Baraldi e Laure Keyrouz (Front of Art).
Due sono gli elementi fortemente contrastanti che emergono con forza a Becharre: la bellezza del paesaggio naturale e le costruzioni in cemento, molte delle quali non completate, che hanno preso il posto delle antiche costruzioni in pietra locale.
Il Libano è uno snodo nevralgico di tutto il medio oriente e le varie confessioni religiose convivono pacificamente, e potrebbero continuare a farlo se non fosse per l’influenza delle nazioni circostanti che sono state alla base delle varie guerre che ciclicamente hanno afflitto il paese. Al momento la guerra in Siria (il confine siriano dista solo una sessantina di chilometri da Becharre) è fonte di grandi preoccupazioni per questa comunità.
L’idea di base del progetto è stata quindi quella di rendere pubblici i sentimenti e le sensazioni che le persone tendono a non manifestare, pur senza mai toccare direttamente il tema della guerra che è veramente uno degli argomenti più controversi da affrontare per un Libanese.
Abbiamo così incontrato diverse persone per farci raccontare la propria storia, in particolare agli anziani chiedevamo di come fosse cambiato il modo di vivere negli anni e se c’era qualcosa del passato che gli mancava particolarmente, mentre ai giovani chiedevamo soprattutto delle loro speranze e di come immaginavano il loro futuro a Becharre.
Da questi racconti abbiamo estratto alcune brevi frasi che ci hanno colpito per la loro poeticità o emblematicità e con l’aiuto di un calligrafo (durante la nostra residenza abbiamo scoperto che ogni comunità libanese ha un calligrafo che si occupa di redigere gli avvisi pubblici per la popolazione) e di tanti ragazzi del posto, le abbiamo dipinte su alcuni muri in cemento della città. E la parte più interessante del lavoro è stato proprio il coinvolgimento e il grande entusiasmo delle tante persone che hanno lavorato con noi. Se all’inizio, quando ci siamo recati dal sindaco per avere le autorizzazioni, sembrava impossibile trovare un muro disponibile, alla fine le persone ci pregavano di scrivere una frase sul muro della propria casa.
Lo spirito delle frasi era: “Eravamo come un cuore aperto che ride in mezzo ai campi” oppure “Quando ti immergi nella valle, con un solo sguardo puoi abbracciare terra e cielo”.
Per noi è stata una bellissima esperienza di lavoro, ma soprattutto di vita, anche perché le curatrici hanno fatto sì che venissimo ospitati da una famiglia libanese, e questo ci ha catapultati subito nello spirito giusto per sviluppare in così breve tempo il nostro lavoro.
"Come il vento (Like the wind)" is the artwork we developed during a residency in Becharre, a Maronite Christian community in the North of Lebanon, where we were invited for the project A place for action, curated by Katia Baraldi and Laure Keyrouz (Front of Art).
There are two contrasting elements that emerge strongly in Becharre: the beauty of the natural landscape and the concrete buildings, many of which have not been completed and that replaced the ancient buildings made out of stone.
Lebanon is a crucial point of the whole Middle East and a place where the various religions coexist peacefully, and it might be so but for the influence of the surrounding nations that caused the various wars which have plagued the country cyclically. At the moment the war in Syria (the Syrian border is only about sixty kilometers from Becharre) is a source of great concern for the Becharre community.
The basic idea of the project was therefore to make public the feelings and sensations that people tend not to show, without ever touching directly the theme of the war that is truly one of the most controversial topics to face by a Lebanese.
So we decided to meet a lot of people asking them to tell us their story. The elderly ones were asked how the way of life had changed over the years and if there was something of the past that they missed particularly, and the young ones were asked about their hopes and how they imagined their future in Becharre.
From these stories we extracted 12 short sentences that affected us because poetic or emblematic, and with the help of a calligrapher (during our residence we discovered that each Lebanese community has a calligrapher who draws up public notices for population) and many local boys and girls, we painted some of these sentences on the concrete walls of the city. And the most interesting part of the work was just the involvement and enthusiasm of so many people who worked together with us. In fact, if at the beginning, when we went to the mayor in order to get the permission to write on the walls, it seemed impossible to find an available one, in the end people begged us to write a sentence on the wall of their own house.
The spirit of the sentences was: " We were like an open heart that laughs in the fields" or "When you immerse yourself in the valley, with just one look you can embrace earth and sky".
It was a very great work experience for us, and above all an important life experience, because the curators gave us the opportunity to be hosted by a Lebanese family, and this fact immediately pitched us into the right spirit to develop in a short time our work.
